It was Saturday night and Lisbon was getting full of people walking around.
My friends and I were hanging out and we casually ended up in this so-called “Taberna”, which is a typical place where fado is performed.
The atmosphere was magical, the room was slightly dark (this is one of the Fado’s several requirements) and the singers came close to each section of the restaurant to perform.
It is said that they prefer to sing without any microphone (when possible) because the song will need to be pure without any interferes.
When they started to sing, I was amazed by the energy, harmony, and vibe that fado can convey to you.
The emotions that I felt at that moment were countless.
One detail that made me reflect and started to get curious about fado was this:
How a sad song can make people enjoy listening to it?
- Fado is per se, a malinchonic and nostalgic melody. However, this makes the Portuguese feel so passionate and attached to these songs that do not express happiness feelings but are indeed so intense and powerful. This was a first, curious to see. Usually, a song transmits good and happy vibes, but with Fado, is the opposite.
- It is a sad symphony, but still, it can shake people’s emotions and create such empathy.
In conclusion, below you can find a draft of my collected information about fado.
